Chapter 4. Sorcery: The Witchcraft Practice for Casting Spells
Jeff Harshbarger, a former Satanist now in Christ, says, “All of the occult practices fall into one or a combination of these three categories: “Magick (sorcery)
Manipulation and control of people, nature, and circumstances through the knowledge and control of the spirit world… “Divination (fortune-telling)
Seeking hidden knowledge not easily available to humans. For example: astrology (horoscopes) and reading your horoscope in an attempt to find out what your future holds… “Spiritism (necromancy)
Contact with the unknown in order to gain desired knowledge. For example: John Edwards and Sylvia Brown, mediums between the living and the dead…” (Jeff Harshbarger, From Darkness to Light, Chapter 12, “General Overview of the Occult,” page 79-80). Occult practices from both white and black witchcraft occult groups fall into one or a combination of the above three categories. This chapter’s focus is on one category of occult practices from the above three: magic or sorcery. In particular the focus on sorcery is seen from its main sphere, as a witchcraft practice for casting spells. What is magic or sorcery? From the above occult practices the essential practice to take note of are those that relate to magic or sorcery. It is through sorcery rituals that their witchcraft manipulation goals of matters on earth are accomplished. It is through sorcery rituals that they labor in order to receive their rewards. What is sorcery? Harshbarger, quoted above, said it’s the, “Manipulation and control of people, nature, and circumstances through the knowledge and control of the spirit world.” Thus magic and sorcery mean the same thing. On a similar description, Smith's Bible Dictionary says, “Magic is ‘the science or practice of evoking spirits, or educing the occult powers of nature to produce effects apparently supernatural.’ It formed an essential element in many ancient religions, especially among the Persians, Chaldeans and Egyptians,” (Smith's Bible Dictionary, “Magic, Magicians”). What are spells or occult spells? A key occult activity that is part of magic or sorcery is spells. The main sphere or focus of sorcery is in casting spells to accomplish desired goals on earthly matters. Casting of spells or spells casting is the main sorcery activity, using Harshbarger’s definition, for the, “Manipulation and control of people, nature, and circumstances through the knowledge and control of the spirit world. Breaking occult spells is the theme of this book. It is through the recognition that occult spells play a central role in sorcery activities of both white and black witchcraft occult groups. Thus dealing with occult spells by preventing them from having any power to fulfill their purpose is what stops sorcery activities from bearing fruit. People in occult groups end up laboring in vain once their work of summoning evil spirits through casting of spells is frustrated by God in the spirit realm. God breaks the spells from bearing fruit, not us. We only do our part and then leave him to do his part in the spirit realm. What are spells or occult spells? A good definition of spells is worth framing it from those who cast occult spells. The Llewellyn Encyclopedia says: “Spells are magical rituals. Magical rituals may also be spells (though there are many different types of rituals). A spell, then, is an act of magic in which energies are raised, “programmed” with a magical need (such as love or money) and directed to do their work. A few spells are secret; most are not. Secret spells aren’t more effective than their non-secret cousins. Any spell will work, provided that it’s been properly written, and provided that it’s properly performed. Spells usually consist of gathering together the needed items, charging them with power, and using them in some fashion…” The encyclopedia above says spells are magical rituals. They are witchcraft or occult practices in the form of sorcery rituals. These sorcery activities or sorcery rituals of working to bring about the desired outcome are what constitute the casting of spells. A spell to produce or harvest something good is called a blessing in many occult circles. A spell to produce something bad is called a hex. Some also call it a curse, although my other book on breaking curses is clear on what curses are. In regard to identifying between what’s a blessing and what’s a hex a problem arises. A blessing to whom and at what cost? Thus it cannot be called a blessing if someone else has been harmed or wronged in order to obtain what was desired. For this reason this book will look at spells without such distinctions. The only distinction that will be made is on whether a spell is in the category of white witchcraft or in black witchcraft. Notice that only those whose general target of spells is labeled “self” are considered as white witchcraft. However if the fulfillment of the desired outcome requires someone else to be harmed or manipulated then the spell becomes black witchcraft. For description purposes this is not assumed in the table below. A person can cast a spell to himself/herself, that is, can direct a spell toward oneself, and can also direct it toward another person, object or entity to fulfill a desired outcome. The list of occult spells I’ve given in the above table is by no means exhaustive. There are spells for almost anything. The best way to understand occult spells is to compare them with our Christian practices. As Christians we pray when we desire something from God. Prayer is our avenue for seeking God, who is in the spirit realm, to provide for us desires and opportunities that we’re unable to attain in our ability. The occult world of white and black witchcraft has another method for seeking a higher power in the spirit realm to help them fulfill their desires. This method is a series of works or rituals that when put together is called spell casting. The rituals of spell casting are not intended to summon God in the spirit realm but are intended to summon evil spirits. As Christians we pray to God to influence matters on earth not just for us but also for other people. Prayer allows God to work on our behalf, even in influencing other people and circumstances. The occult world of white and black witchcraft uses spells to influence matters on earth. Casting of spells sets the stage for evil spirits to work on behalf of the people casting the spells, even in influencing other people and circumstances. As Christians Prayer is not only an avenue to receive our desires from God. It’s also an avenue of worship to God. Through prayer we acknowledge our insufficiency before God and concede to his authority in our lives. This is worship. We subordinate ourselves before God through prayer. For people in white and black witchcraft spell casting also serves as an avenue of worship to evil spirits. People in white witchcraft may firmly deny that they worship any spirit. However the act of performing the rituals in submission and obedience to what the spirits require before they can take any action is by its nature an act of worship. They would also argue that the spirits they summon are not evil spirits but just mere spirits in the spirit world. People in black witchcraft occult groups, particularly in Satanism, know that spell casting also serves as an act of worship. Those in Satanism even have other rituals of pure worship to their master, Satan. How is the casting of spells carried out in the occult world?
